Mobs that are named are not supposed to despawn when the chunk is unloaded. Outside of naming mobs, name tags are useful for preventing mobs from despawning. Once a mob is named, it can never be un-named, though its name can be replaced via another name tag. The mob can still be killed if targeted in the “mm m kill X” command or using a “minecraft:kill” command. You can do this when you summon the mob like this: /summon creeper ~ ~ ~ {PersistenceRequired:1b} Or by changing the mob's data after summoning them: Mob Behavior. If the mob is a zombie (or variant) or skeleton (or variant), you can give it an item (block to hold, armor to wear, etc) and that makes it so it won't despawn. That's not vanilla minecraft. Mobs that are named using the name tag also never despawn in the world, similar to tamed mobs. But for animal mobs that ARE NOT caged in and enemy mobs, will naming them preserve them form despawning.. Recently I've been keeping a name tagged zombie in a cauldron, and even when I was building in the very same chunk as the zombie, occasionally if I took my eye off him, I'd return to the cauldron to find that he had despawned.
